Congrats to NALSA and Civil Rights Competition Teams

Congratulations to the NALSA and Civil Rights teams for doing an outstanding job representing OU this past weekend.

The NALSA team competed in Portland, Oregon.  Maryanne Mohan and Sage Garland advanced to the second elimination round and finished 6th in the tournament out of a field of over 60 teams.  They won two of three ballots in the Elite 8 round, but lost on points to advance to the Final 4. Congrats to coach Taiawagi Helton, assisted by Casey Delaney, for their outstanding work with the team.  Our team’s understanding of the law was superb!

Congrats to OU BLSA Chapter on an Outstanding Year

CONGRATULATIONS to BLSA Frederick Douglass Moot Court team members Graham Boone and Courtney Hilliard!  The team won 2nd place at the regional competition in Dallas last weekend.  This qualifies them for the national finals in Atlanta, Georgia in early March.  The team also won Best Petitioner’s Brief.  This was quite a feat considering the difficulties we had submitting the brief the day after Thanksgiving!

Additionally, our OU BLSA chapter won Chapter of the Year and Best Program of the Year.

BLSA Team Places 3rd in National Competition

Congratulations to the BLSA International Negotiation Competition team for winning 3rd place in the nation at last weekend’s competition in Washington, D.C.  Team members are Valerie Fleurima and Nazareth Haysbert.

One exciting part of this competition is the time frame for preparation.  While they were given some general information beforehand, the side they were representing and the secret facts for their side were not provided until a few hours before each round.

OU Law places third in ABA Section of Taxation Law Student Tax Challenge

Congratulations to our National Tax Challenge Team:  Jessica S. Cory and Brandee R. Raney.  They placed third in the American Bar Association Section of Taxation’s 11th Annual Law Student Tax Challenge.  An alternative to traditional moot court competitions, this national competition asks two-person teams of students to solve a cutting-edge and complex business problem that might arise in everyday tax practice.

Teams were initially evaluated on two criteria:  a memorandum to a senior partner and a letter to the client explaining the result.
