OU Law Wears Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Day

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Many members of the OU College of Law faculty and staff wore purple on Thursday, Oct. 3, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Day. The office of Student Services gathered together for this picture to show their support for efforts to end domestic violence. According to the YWCA, Oklahoma ranks 17 among the 50 states in cases involving deaths from domestic abuse. Unfortunately, it is estimated only about 50 percent of domestic violence incidents are reported.

Allie Spears, a 2011 COL graduate, received the Prosecutor Award at the State Capitol during the Excellence in Action against Domestic Violence Awards. Events are planned throughout the month to honor the victims and survivors of domestic abuse. You can read about what you can do to help prevent domestic abuse at: www.ocadvsa.org and http://www.ywcaokc.org.

If you or someone you know needs help, the Oklahoma Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault hotline is 1-800-522 SAFE(7233).
