Summer Success Tips from OPCD

Even though school is out, the Office of Professional and Career Development (OPCD) is open, and staff members are available to assist you throughout June, July and August. In addition to having office appointments, the staff would like to offer the following tips to encourage you to make the most of your summer days.

1. Check Job Posts
Symplicity, an online resource for students at https://law-ou-csm.symplicity.com/students, is continually updated with new job posts. Check it weekly to view new opportunities that become available this summer and fall.

2. Volunteer
Volunteering can help expand both your professional experience and contact list. Many organizations, such as Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Lawyers For Children, depend on volunteer services year-round. Make an effort to shine in your volunteer position, and the pro bono work may lead to a job offer.

3. Schedule Networking Appointments
Do you have friends or family who are working in areas that interest you? Or do your friends or family know professionals who are? (Check LinkedIn to make such connections.) Summer is a great time to book networking appointments. Most lawyers love to share how they got started and give an inside look at what their organizations seek in new hires. Schedule the appointment around their busy schedules, and be flexible in your time request. If they can only give you 15 minutes, take it. If they can only meet during lunch, meet them somewhere near their office and offer to buy. And don’t forget to bring your resume and take useful notes.

4. Attend Bar Events
Bar Association events can also be a great networking tool. Attend law sections with regular meetings that cater to your interests. You will be interacting with attorneys working in the field you want to enter; building relationships with them can only enhance your future endeavors to enter the field.

5. Say “Thank You”
Making a great first impression doesn’t end with the last minutes of your interview, volunteer job, networking appointment or professional event. Don’t forget to express your gratitude afterward through a hand-written note, which shows the most sincerity. However, be sure to use professional stationary and correct spelling and grammar. Otherwise, your efforts may backfire.

6. Visit OPCD
OPCD staff members want to wish you a productive summer and remind you that their doors are always open. Staff members are available all summer to assist students and graduates with job searches, cover letter editing and resume coaching. To schedule an appointment, contact the staff at placement@law.ou.edu.
