Legal Intern Requirements

50 Hours, Course and GPA Requirements

A student must have completed 50 hours of Law School work with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or better and must have completed the following courses: Evidence, Civil Procedure, and Professional Responsibility before being sworn in as a Legal Intern. A student will be allowed to take the Legal Intern Exam during the semester he or she is completing these requirements.

Registration Requirement

A student must be registered as a law student with the Board of Bar Examiners. If you are registered as a law student in another state, you may not have to register in Oklahoma. If you plan to register NUNC PRO TUNC please be warned that it could take 4-6 months to get final approval from the Board of Bar Examiners. You will not be able to enroll in the Civil Clinic or the Criminal Defense Clinic unless you have been approved by the Board of Bar Examiners the FIRST day of classes for that semester.

Application Requirement

A student must submit an Application for a Limited License with $50.00 fee to the OBA one week prior to taking the Legal Intern Examination. Examination Requirement

A student must pass either the short or long Legal Intern Examination with a grade of 70% or higher. The application deadline for the examination is one week prior to the examination date. A student is eligible to take the short examination (50 multiple choice and true/false questions - l hour) if he or she has proof of having passed the MPRE. Otherwise, the student must take the Long Examination (100 multiple choice and true/false questions -2 hours).

Supervising Attorney Requirement

A student must submit a supervising attorney application (Form 2) for approval to the OBA. A student cannot be sworn in as a Legal Intern until a supervising attorney is obtained.

Enrollment Requirement

A student must be enrolled in one of the following courses before he or she can be sworn in as a Legal Intern, and must either continue to be enrolled each semester in the O.U. Legal Clinic or be registered in the Legal Externship Program * *(see below) in order for their Legal Intern License to remain "active" .

  1. Civil Clinic/Legal Aid Clinic (Law 6363) - 3 hours of credit - A student works l0-12 hours per week in the Clinic office at the Law Center and handles various civil cases from an initial interview through trial. Enrollment in the Civil Practice Skills Class (Law 6372 - 2 hours) is required the initial semester of enrollment in the Civil Clinic. A required orientation meeting is scheduled during the first week of classes.
  2. Criminal Defense Clinic (Law 6323) - 3 hours of credit - A student works 10-12 hours per week in the Clinic office at the Law Center and handles various criminal and municipal cases from an initial interview stage through trial. Enrollment in the Criminal Litigation Skills Class (Law 6322 -2 hours) is required the initial semester of enrollment in the Criminal Defense Clinic. A required orientation meeting is scheduled during the first week of classes.

* *Legal Externship Program

All students who are working as Legal Interns must be registered in the Legal Externship Program. Students register in the Legal Externship Program in Lori Ketner's Office (Room 2020) during the first two weeks of each semester. A student must register each semester they want to maintain an "active" Intern License. (Students who are enrolled in the O.U. Legal Clinic are not required to be registered in the Legal Externship Program.)

Short Legal Intern Examinations

A student is eligible to take the short Legal Intern Examination consisting of 50 multiple choice and true/false questions (1 hour) if he or she has proof of passing the MPRE. A student must attach a copy of his/her MPRE score to the Legal Intern Application (Form No. 1) copy given to Lori Ketner, Room 2020. The short Legal Intern Examination will cover Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Legal Internship (pdf, opens in a new window)

Long Legal Intern Examination & the MPRE

If a student does not have proof of having passed the MPRE, he or she must take the Long Legal Intern Examination (2 hours), which will include the information listed under the short exam AND the following material:

  1. Oklahoma Rules on Legal Internship (effective April 2003).
  2. Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct, (5 O.S. Ch. 1, App. 3-A, effective July 1, 1988, as amended)
  3. Oklahoma Code of Judicial Conduct, (5 O.S. Ch. 1, App. 4)
  4. Oklahoma Rules of the Court on the Judiciary, (5 O.S. Ch 1, App. 7)

The Legal Intern Examination will not take the place of the MPRE, and the MPRE will not take the place of the Legal Intern Examination. A student will be sworn in as a Legal Intern when all requirements for a limited license have been met. The ceremony is scheduled by the OBA and is held at the Supreme Court. A Legal Intern must notify the OBA immediately of any change in status in his/her supervising attorney and/or to notify the OBA to inactivate his/her license due to unemployment as a Legal Intern.
