Estate Planning

Estate planning is the process through which lawyers and clients work toward an optimized strategy for the ownership, management, and orderly transfer of both current and anticipated assets during life and upon death.

The Juris Doctor Program

Estate planning law is a broad practice area, often incorporating family law, property law, health care, and taxation. Some of the most common tasks of estate planning lawyers are the creation of wills and trusts, naming an executor of an estate, creating beneficiaries, establishing a guardian for living dependents, and planning for potential incapacity or more general elder care.

OU Law’s estate planning curriculum blends transaction, procedure, and litigation, as well as statutory, regulatory, and case law. Students interested in developing related proficiency would be well-served by focusing on courses that target these substantive areas, as well as those providing repeated opportunities for client interviewing and counseling, expository writing, and alternate dispute resolution.
