
NATIVE AMERICAN LAW CERTIFICATE
In 2002, the Center for the Study of American Indian Law and Policy at the University of Oklahoma College of Law instituted a Certificate Program in American Indian Law. Students earning the certificate will be able to show they have had significant coursework, a substantial research opportunity and employment in the field upon completion of the program.
Full-time degree-candidate OU Law students are eligible to receive the certificate upon the successful completion of the requirements outlined below.
Requirements
- 5610 Federal Indian Law (required course)
Two of the following from the Indian Law curriculum, including one course requiring a research paper:
- 5600 Native American Natural Resources
- 5600 American Indian Law Seminar, Selected Legal Problems
- 6311 American Indian Law Review (two semesters)
- 5602 Comparative Indigenous Peoples' Law
- 6700 Tribal Courts/Tribal Law
- 6700 Indian Gaming Law and Regulation Seminar
- 6700 Federal Indian Water Law
One of the following externships or approved employment in the field:
- 6400 Federal Indian Law Externship
- 6400 Extern Placement, provided the externship focuses substantially on the practice of American Indian Law, including a judicial externship
- 6400 Inter-American Human Rights Commission Externship
- One hundred hours of employment as approved by the Center Director
One of the following related courses from the general curriculum:
- 5403 Administrative Law
- 5543 Federal Courts
- 6060 International Law Foundations
- 6523 Environmental Law
- 6540 Oil and Gas
- 6580 Water Law
