A citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and a district judge for the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma, Michael Smith teaches courses on tribal courts and tribal sovereignty. Smith also previously served as court advocate for the Judicial Branch, Chickasaw Nation.

Smith practices law at Smith & Smith Attorneys with concentrations in Contracts, Real Estate, Commercial Law, Social Security Disability Law, Criminal Law, Indian Law, Family Law, Adoption, Guardianship, Wills and Estates, Personal Injury and Juvenile Law.

He is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, Cleveland County Bar Association, Chickasaw Nation Bar Association, Muscogee (Creek) Nation Bar Association and US Western District of Oklahoma Bar Association. He also serves on the board for the Native American Rights Fund (NARF).
