LL.M. in Indigenous Peoples Law

Located in the heart of the original Indian Territory, OU Law provides an ideal environment for the study of Native American law and issues concerning indigenous peoples. Oklahoma contains nearly 40 tribal nations and the second-largest Native American population in the United States. Given their presence and the history of the region, Indian law affects virtually all areas of legal practice, making it a vibrant and growing field.

The LL.M. degree in Indigenous Peoples Law is a 25 credit hour program which can be completed in 15 months.

Program Overview

The online LL.M in Indigenous Peoples Law is designed for lawyers seeking additional knowledge in the field of Federal Indian Law. This program exposes lawyers to advanced legal education focused on natural resources, criminal jurisdiction, gaming law and the Indian Child Welfare act. The program is offered fully online and can be completed in 15 months.

Indigenous Peoples Expertise

The online LL.M. in Indigenous Peoples Law has been designed specifically for practicing attorneys by the Native American Law Faculty at OU. This program offers the opportunity to acquire broad knowledge of Indigenous Peoples Law to help clients better navigate the complexities of Federal Indian Law.

LL.M. Courses

Subject to Graduate Programs Committee approval, students select 25 hours from the following list of the College of Law online Indigenous Peoples Law program. Students will take a common required 19 hours and 6 hours taken from those courses designated below.  The 6 hours of general electives can be drawn from rest of the College of Law’s Curriculum under the direction and advice of the Program’s lead faculty.

  • LSI-5643 International Indigenous Peoples Law

Elective Courses (6 hours required)

  • LSI-5673 Indian Gaming Laws & Regulations
  • LSI-5693 Indian Child Welfare Act & Family Law in Indian Country
  • LSI-5663 Water law in Indian Country

A College of Law LSI or LAW course may be substituted for one of the above courses with the advanced approval of the Indigenous Peoples lead faculty.
