Incoming first-year law students will join OU Law faculty and staff this Friday for a fun, relaxed evening as they receive their section assignments and mingle with fellow classmates.
This event provides 1Ls with a communal, less intimidating transition into their first year of law school, giving them the opportunity to familiarize themselves with fellow law students before kicking off the next three years of law school.
Here are a few tips students should keep in mind before arriving at Friday’s event:
- Dress casual.
Forgo the suit and heels and come as you are. There will be plenty of opportunities to pull out your best courtroom attire over the next three years. Keep in mind this is an outdoor event, so be weather conscious and dress accordingly.
- Help personalize the party playlist.
In addition to a live band, the admissions team welcomes your song suggestions. Email Autumn Lockett, Director of Admissions, at alockett@ou.edu if you have a suggestion for the night’s playlist.
- Again – leave your suit and heels at home.
Don’t be the only person sporting business wear. Meeting new people is uncomfortable enough without a suit jacket and high heels thrown into the mix.
- Prepare to make lifelong friends.
Nerves are normal, but don’t let it keep you from mingling. These people will be your classmates for the next three years and professional peers for the rest of your life. Understand that everyone is just as nervous as you are, so don’t be afraid to jump into conversions and learn a little about your fellow classmates.
- Don’t be intimated by the faculty.
This event is an incredible opportunity to network and meet OU Law’s faculty and staff. They are in attendance because they want to get to know you. Go shake their hand and introduce yourself. These conversations will be the building blocks of your professional network.
The OU College of Law Welcome and Section Release Party is this Friday, June 7, at 7 p.m. If you have questions or need more information, contact Law Events at lawevents@ou.edu.
